[09 Jul 2010|02:59pm]

Hi there --

I'm an admitted student and I'm very interested in attending Allegheny, but I'm torn between this school and one other and I'm having a hard time deciding. This is because of a few concerns/questions I have about Allegheny that weren't cleared up by a visit to the campus. If you guys could help out, I'd really appreciate it.

First off, what's the culture like at Allegheny? I'm confident about the quality of the academics, and I'm impressed by everything I've heard about the Honor Code and the accessibility of professors, etc, but I haven't heard as much about Allegheny's social life. Are there things going on beyond the Greek life? Like, is there a funky geeky gay-friendly kind of thing going on, and a sense of community that doesn't revolve around sports or frats?

Second, what's public transportation like? Googling has brought me to things like the CATA bus, but is that actually good for getting around the area, and to train stations and airports? For example, if I wanted to take a weekend trip after class lets out on Friday and didn't own a car, would that be feasible?

Thanks in advance and I hope you're all having fun on your summer break. :D

Hi everyone,

I'm going to be visiting Allegheny soon, and I would love to learn more about it from you guys (I figure the more perspectives the better).

1) How strong is the history and French departments? I would like a challenging course load.

2) Studying abroad is a huge goal of mine, so is this prevalent?

3) Social scene? I'm not big on the whole drinking aspect of school, so is there a lot of other things to do? Or at least, people who feel the same way?

4) Why did you decide to attend Allegheny?

sadness :( [05 Apr 2008|02:46pm]

I was just wondering what everyone has done in order to afford Allegheny College. I want to be there more than anything, but we have a remaining balance left over that is far too much than what my family can afford. I got the Trustee Scholarship and an Allegheny Grant, but my parents are unable to take out loans due to past financial mistakes. Is there any advice I could be given regarding how to make ends meet? I know about additional loans that students can take out if their parents are denied the Parent Plus Loan, but I essentially have a full ride at Seton Hill and it would be foolish to put myself in a life-long debt when it could be avoided. However, I REALLY don't want to go to Seton Hill, and I wish to major in Neuroscience and Psychology (which I couldn't do at Seton Hill). Thanks if anyone could help :/

I'm in! [27 Dec 2007|11:18am]

I just wanted to tell everyone here that you might be seeing me next fall :D My acceptance letter came last week! I'll probably be scheduling an overnight visit sometime in January or February and I'll post again (with more details) once I know for sure.

I have one question about financial aid. Is there a maximum amount of money allotted for an Allegheny Grant?

And out of curiosity, what is your major? I can't decide if I want to major in Communications, Psychology, or Computer Science. Does anyone have a double-major? I was thinking that I could maybe have a double major in Communications and Computer Science. By doing that, I would be able to work as a Computer Software Engineer or Programmer and the Communications skills would allow me to work more efficiently with customers. Any thoughts?

application [10 Nov 2007|12:15pm]

It's me again :D I officially applied to all of the colleges I'm interested in on November 2. I think I read on the site that I won't be notified of acceptance until April 1. Did I misread that, or do I really have to wait that long? I already received  one acceptance letter, but Allegheny is my first choice and I don't want to have to put everything else off to wait for Allegheny. I will, though ;)

thanks [18 Oct 2007|06:48am]

Thanks for all of the welcomes yesterday :D

This isn't exactly a question about the goings-on at Allegheny, but it's a question nonetheless. Does anyone have any pictures of campus? I toured with an organization I'm in yesterday, so my parents weren't able to come and they really want to see what it looks like. Thanks!

Make what you want as a tutor. Pay what you want for a tutor. [19 Feb 2007|04:48pm]

Trying to spread the word to everyone out there paying more than they want for a tutor or making less than they want as a tutor.  Take a look at SelectATutor.com.  Tutors list their credentials and self-chosen wage in each subject.  For tutors, this means you make exactly what you want per hour in any subject you want.  For those in need of tutors, this means you get the benefit of competition.  Since you choose your tutors based on their prices and credentials, tutors compete for you.  I’ve found it’s a great way to pull in some really quick and easy extra money as a tutor.  It’s also got tutors in just about every subject.

Tutors, you can list yourself under as many subjects as you want for only $8.95 per month.

Attention! You Lazy Bloggers! [09 Nov 2006|10:32am]

[ mood | good ]

Oh man. Reading the school paper sure is fun these days and definitely generates a HUGE amount of conversation (often among people agreeing with each other...but I'll take what I can get). I want more of that conversation, but who among us, with Allegheny's infamous workload and our age group's propensity towards lazinees, has got the time/energy to write to the paper?

Ok, we all do. There really aren't any excuses for opinionated and intelligent people to submit articles to the paper...

However, I think it's a good and neat idea to use this blog for some good ol' fashioned debate/argument times.

Well, to kick things off, I'll just throw some phrases out there and see where they go:

Ben Sperry.

2-party system.

The religious right.

SNOWING [02 Nov 2006|10:40pm]

[ mood | cold ]

So.  Much.  Snow right now. I'm not gonna lie, I'm excited.

It's so pretty outside, but I know we probably won't see the ground again until about May.

If you would like to live in the Allegheny Gay Pride (AGP) House next semester, please contact JC Bangoy [bangoyj] and/or myself [beldent] AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. It is a great opportunity to be a part of a great organization (although envolvement in the group is not required....), to live in a house with cool people, and to continue this progressive (according to a statistic from last year's housing application, only 2 LGBT-themed college owned houses existed in the United States) and tolerant household.

Just for clarification, AGP is open to everyone and the house follows suit.

Thank you for your time.

Tamara Belden, AGP Co-president

[07 Dec 2005|01:49am]

I sent in all my application stuff like in the beginning of November and, with the exception of a notice that I needed to get all my school transcripts and stuff sent in, I have not yet been notified of my acceptance or rejection. Is this normal? Do they wait all the way until the deadline to notify you? I'm getting very worried.

Thanks for any info-
